Why all the fuss around blogging?

When I think of a 'blogger', the image of a trendy, young girl snapping pictures from her iPhone of her coffee and outfit for the day comes to mind, #bloggerbelike #morningslikethese. Although I've been in the industry for years and have worked with many bloggers, I still associate this mental picture when I hear the word 'blogger'. And I bet I'm not the only one! But now it seems like more and more business owners are starting their own blogs. Are they just trying to stay 'trendy' and appeal to this young millennial generation or is blogging truly important for business owners?

Seriously, what is all the fuss around blogging?

 

Well you're not alone in wondering this. You already have a lot on your plate running your own business. Blogging seems like it could be a lot of work. Is it worth investing your precious time into starting a blog?

Fear not, today I'm going to answer this question for you so that you can finally decide whether to jump on the blogging bandwagon once and for all.

Why all the fuss around blogging? #ShouldIStartaBlog?

Okay let's not waste time weighing up the pros and cons here. You've got work to do! The way I see it there is only one con, it takes time, but, as we will explore in this post, there are so many pros! So instead of forcing you to read to the end to get your answer, I'll save you some time...

Drumroll....YES! OUI! DEFINITELY! WITHOUT FAIL! DO IT! You should ABSOLUTELY start a blog.

But if my attempt to tell you YES in as many ways as possible isn't enough to convince you, here are 4 reasons why you should ABSOLUTELY start a blog:

 

1. Get ahead in the search engine race to the top

Being first isn't always best but when it comes to search engines, you can scrap that theory! No matter what your knowledge of the online world is, there is one thing we can all agree on; the higher your website ranking on Google, the more traffic you will get to your website.

I'm not going to start analyzing Google's ranking algorithm here, I'm sure you wouldn't care for that! But I will say this, having more keywords on your website does increase your ranking. And what better way to pack your website full of keywords than blogging. Seriously, write a blog, tie a little bow around it and send it off to the Google gods above. If they like the content of your gift, you will be rewarded. Big time. If not, keep trying. Sooner or later, you are bound to get it right. 

 

2. Buddy up with your customers

If you have a big company or an online business, it can be difficult to connect with your customers on a personal level. Sure, you would love to chat with each customer one-on-one, but who has time for that? You have a business to run! Writing a blog is a great way for you and your customers to spend a little time together. It's like being able to connect with hundreds of pen pals all at once!

Not only does it give you a chance to express yourself, showing your lighter, fun side, but it's also the perfect conversation starter (no more awkward weather conversations!). Encourage your readers to comment back and express their opinions and experiences. Let them ask you questions and take the time to respond. No need to make a hundred phone calls or host a big event just to meet your customers. Stay in your PJ's, make yourself a cup of coffee and cozy up with your laptop.

 

3. The one place you can be a show-off

No one likes a show off in the 'real world', but in the world of blogging, being a show-off can be your biggest asset. Show off your skills and expertise! Go crazy! Let everyone know how knowledgeable you are in your field. By doing this you establish yourself as an industry leader, making you the go-to person next time someone is in need of your product or service.

 

4. Sell your business without the slobber. Huh?

No one likes to see ads pushing products and services at them. Those days are gone! Seriously, don't be like that awkward guy at the bar slobbering over all the girls. These days you have to be much more subtle. Buy your customer a drink first and play it cool. Get their phone number and butter them up with a dinner date. Then when the timing is right, you can go in for the kiss. Okay, this makes sense in a real life scenario, but how does this relate to blogging? 

Place some of your advertising budget behind your blog posts to attract new visitors to your website. In your blog posts, specifically address certain challenges your target audience are facing and show them how your product or service can help. You could provide them with some sort of free offering, such as an e-book, free trial or fact sheet, in exchange for their email address. Once you have nurtured the relationship and the timing feels right, throw in a little pitch directing them to purchase your product or service. But only do this AFTER YOU HAVE PROVED YOUR VALUE.

This is how you would approach someone in the 'real world' so why not apply this same tactic to the online world.
